28 days, that’s how long it’s been since Derrick and I embarked on the biggest adventure of our lives. I can’t believe how quickly this has all gone by. Before we know it, Lynley and Corbin will be home and then walking, talking, going to school, and moving out on us! Let’s not jump that far ahead….
This week, we’ve seen vast improvements with eating. Lynely drank all of her milk from a bottle today! That’s exactly what they are looking for in order for her to be discharged. Now, she just has to keep doing that. Corbin still has issues with drinking from a bottle. He will take about 10 percent and then get choked up. This week, he turned blue on me, which normally wouldn’t phase me because it happens and it’s normal for how early he is. But, he wasn’t recovering on his own like he usually does, and he had to be given a little oxygen. It was terrifying even though I knew he was ok the whole time. He was breathing, but very shallow. He still just can’t handle the flow of milk with the bottle, but soon he will get it.
Breastfeeding is going much better for Corbin. He actually is able to regulate himself and doesn’t really get choked up. His record is 20 minutes at the breast, and I hope he continues to do well. This is more important than the bottle anyway. Lynley also does well with nursing. She has always been very interested, and she has yet to sputter or choke up. However, she won’t burp for me! Never fails, as soon as I lay her down, she spits up! We changed her twice today, and I wished I had a change of clothes too. I wore my spit up sleeve proudly as a sign of initiation into the world of motherhood.
Aside from feeding, they both passed eye exams and hearing screens this week. And I gave them baths completely on my own with no help from nurses! I’m becoming quite self-sufficient, and I’m very proud. It’s so easy to use the nurses as a crutch, but they won’t be coming home with us. I need to learn to juggle two babies on my own.
Looking forward to what this coming week has to bring. I expect to see a vast improvement with both of them. They are both gaining weight really well. He weighs 5 1/2 pounds and she weighs 4lbs 7oz. He’s become a little chubby and both have almost outgrown the preemie clothes. Can’t wait to dress them in some of the adorable newborn clothes they received as gifts! Too bad they’ll be growing out of those before too long too…. but again, not jumping that far ahead!

OK attempt three to post on this blog .. lol
